Description
A simple, one-pan chocolate chip snack cake made with basic pantry ingredients, perfect for families and casual desserts.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ⅔ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup lightly packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup room temperature water
- ⅓ cup neutral-flavored oil
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease an 8X8-inch baking pan. If you use a glass pan, reduce the oven temperature to 325 degrees F.
- Whisk flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt together in a medium bowl.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Add the water, oil, vinegar, vanilla extract, and chocolate chips into the well.
- Stir the mixture until it is just combined and you see no dry streaks remaining.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. The cake is done when the top springs back lightly when you touch it and a toothpick comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Add extra time if baking in a glass pan at 325 degrees F.
- Optionally, dust the top of the cake or individual slices with powdered sugar. Serve the cake warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- For whole wheat flour, substitute it for the all-purpose flour, but check the texture during mixing.
- If you use a glass pan, remember to lower the oven temperature to 325 degrees F and check for doneness slightly later.
