A warm, bakery-style breakfast casserole with cinnamon streusel topping.

- 1 loaf bread (challah, French, or white)
- 8 eggs
- 2 1/2 cups half & half
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste or extract
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste or extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup melted butter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13 baking dish.
- Cut bread into 1-inch cubes and place in the dish.
- Whisk eggs, half & half, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a pitcher.
- Pour egg mixture over bread cubes and let soak.
- Mix flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla for streusel.
- Add melted butter to streusel mixture and combine with a fork.
- Sprinkle streusel evenly over the bread mixture.
- Bake until golden and set, about 45 minutes.
Notes
- Prepare the night before and bake fresh in the morning.
- Serve with maple syrup or powdered sugar.
