Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey/sausage)
  • 4 medium russet potatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 1 small onion (diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional, for extra depth)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (plus extra for topping)
  • ½ cup mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter (melted)
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven – Set your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Cook the Meat – In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat. Add onion, garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, and Italian seasoning. Cook for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
  • Prepare Sauce – In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly add milk and beef broth, stirring continuously until slightly thickened. Remove from heat.
  • Assemble Casserole – Layer half the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Spread half the cooked meat mixture over them. Pour half of the sauce on top. Repeat with another layer of potatoes, meat, and sauce.
  • Add Cheese – Sprinkle cheddar and mozzarella cheese evenly over the top.
  • Bake – Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 15 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  • Cool & Serve – Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm!

Notes

  • Make it low-carb: Swap potatoes for thinly sliced zucchini or cauliflower.
  • Add extra protein: Stir in bacon, shredded chicken, or sausage for more heartiness.
  • Switch up the cheese: Use pepper jack, Swiss, or smoked gouda for a different flavor.
  • Vegetarian option: Replace ground beef with mushrooms, lentils, or black beans.
  • Storing leftovers: Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes or in the microwave in short bursts.
  • Freezing option: Assemble the casserole, wrap tightly, and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight before baking.
